Carmelite Chapel in the Northshore Mall
Cardinal Richard Cushing of the Archdiocese of Boston dedicated the opening of U.S.A.'s first Catholic Chapel in a shopping mall at the Northshore Mall in Peabody, Massachusetts on January 28, 1960. The original mission of the St. Therese Carmelite Chapel was, and continues to be, to provide a convenient opportunity to discover peace of mind, heart and soul in the midst of our fast paced, high stress lives. The Order of Carmelites provided the sacramental and spiritual services to its congregation until February 1, 2016 when the transition was made to the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate founded in 1831 by Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara of India. The C. M. I. s have grown rapidly since their inception with ministries now in 32 countries and many states from Massachusetts to California. For more than half a century, the Chapel has offered daily opportunities to attend Holy Mass, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Anointing of the Sick, Spiritual Direction and as much quiet time for serenity and spiritual enrichment as your heart, mind and soul desire. Next to our Chapel (Lower Level-Entrance next to Not Your Average Joe's Restaurant) is our Catholic Gift Shop where you can purchase religious gifts, books, etc. and request Masses to be said for your loved ones. You're most welcome to join our growing community.
